According to Action Fraud, Cybercrime reports increased to 400% during Covid; adding to this the global losses from Cybercrime are projected to surpass 6 trillion dollars by 2021 (McAfee report), it has never been more vital that you know how to protect your company.
October is CyberSecurity Awareness month, so to keep your company protected from any lurking threats and scares, here are our 10 top tips:
- Use a trusted Antivirus software and firewall to stop hackers and viruses entering the system.
- Turn on automatic updates for your antivirus software to avoid ransomware and malware and keep your firewall enabled
- Be careful what you click. Check the URL and verify if it’s from a trusted source and be suspicious of downloads and attachments from unverified sources to avoid phishing scams.
- Use a strong password with numbers and symbols and change the passwords every 6-8 weeks. Never write down the password where it can be seen by others or use the same password for all your devices.
- Use a VPN in public places to encrypt your traffic in the public, unsecured network and avoid malicious activity, such as cryptojacking, and use secure websites (https) instead of apps for increased security.
6. Turn GPS off to avoid being located.
7. Enable multi-factor authentication to block out unauthorised users by needing two credentials.
8. Have social engineering awareness training for all employees! Most cyber-attacks rely on techniques to trick people into revealing information.
9. Back up your data regularly.
10. Never leave your devices unattended.
It takes 314 days on average to contain a breach, according to IBM’s Data Breach Report 2021, and only 5% of company folders are properly protected! The importance of a CyberSecurity professional on your team is invaluable in the current climate. You do not want to fall victim to cybercrime!
