Uncovered –  Cyber salaries in 2023

Ever wondered how much you could make by switching careers into the cybersecurity field? The UK Cybersecurity Salary Survey (Cybershark Recruitment anonymously polled 2,300 executives) has been published and its quite informative! Keep reading for all things salary rises, which roles score the highest salaries, and why the current financial crisis means cyber workers are earning even more!

According to the survey – when reviewing salary rises year-on-year from 2021 to 2022, the highest wage increases were in Incident Response (up a whopping 10.8%), Identity and Access Management (up a high 10.3%) and Governance, Risk and Compliance (up 6.6%) in 2022. For a lot of candidates, seeing a position they are already working in getting a 10% increase in expected salary per annum is sure to make employees demand more from their current employers, and when seeking new roles, be less likely to negotiate on salary knowing that their skills are in high demand.

So, which roles land the bigger salaries?

According to the survey, a starting-level Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) executive can expect an average annual pay packet of £37,500, (that’s pretty impressive for a starting salary!) while a mid-level GRC leader takes home £80,375, and execs with 20-plus years’ experience can expect to collect £195,000!

A starting Incident Response executive can expect average annual wages of £54,250, while a mid- Incident Response leader receives almost double that at £96,500!

A beginner identity and access management (IAM) executive has an annual wage of £45,000, while a mid-level IAM leader receives £82,500, and execs with 20-plus years’ experience take home £130,000.

Considering a career in cybersecurity? – the above should be enough to convince you!

What is causing such a salary spike?

Increased demand and salary increases are ultimately driven by need.

The financial crisis is making businesses more aware of their need to respond to incidents quickly, their need to protect data and systems from outside threats, and the need to avoid failing regulations and audits. In this environment and our current economic climate, it seems quite natural that these skills will be in demand, as these niche skills are protecting company data.

The number of successful attacks with direct negative impact on businesses are growing.

The need to attract these skills from such a small pool of talent is whats driving the demand in salary increase. This should level out over time, but for now – these highly skilled cybersecurity workers are reaping the rewards.
